Hands up if you are a tea lover. Do you usually stick to your Earl Grey breakfast teas, or are you into trying some different options? And have you ever tried cacao or chocolate tea?
Cacao tea is actually a by-product of the chocolate making process. I know that doesn’t sound very appetising maybe, but hear me out. Once the cacao beans have been fermented, dried, and roasted, they are cracked and emptied of their cacao nibs, leaving behind the empty but still flavourful husks. These husks are then packaged up and become a beautiful and nutrient rich tea for us to enjoy!
What’s in cacao tea?
Cacao is known for it’s high levels of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins such as magnesium Iron and Zinc.
Instead of caffeine, cacao contains theobromine which is a mood boosting stimulant. You might think that caffeine is very similar but it really isn’t. Theobromine encourages your body to (slowly) release your natural endorphins which help you feel good. This might be why you feel better after eating a piece of high quality (high cacao percentage) chocolate when you are in a bad mood or having a bad day.
Because cacao tea is caffeine free it is a delicious option at any time of the day. It is also naturally vegan, refined sugar free, dairy free, gluten free, and keto friendly. So you can share it with all your friends!
3 Different ways to enjoy cacao tea
1. You can make a cup of cacao tea by simply steeping the husks in a mug of boiled water for 3-4 minutes, just like any other loose leave tea you enjoy.
2. Mix your cacao tea in with another one of your favourite loose leave tea blends to combine the power of flavour and nutrients!
3. Enjoy a delicious iced tea version, and add fresh slices of lemon for a refreshing summer drink.
